Matthew 4:16

the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned

Here we read of the promised light that was to come to coastal lands of Israel. These were some of the furthest points away from the temple. As such they were considered to be in darkness because the devout practice of Jewish religious life was not as strict there. It was in these areas where the light Jesus’ ministry would shine bright.

We need light to see. In a place where there is no light everyone is blind. The dawning of Jesus’ birth reminds us that we were spiritually without light and blind. Doomed to grope around for a way to please God, which ultimately fails. Jesus, our light, gives sight to our souls and lights a path for our reunion with God.

Hark! the herald angels sing,
Jesus, the light of the world.
Glory to the newborn King,
Jesus, the light of the world.
