Matthew 1:21

She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.

Jesus’ name, meaning God saves, was a constant reminder to those around him of his ultimate purpose. He lived out this purpose to the fullest. From the  constant reminder of the inadequate nature of religious practice and Jewish heritage to save  to the ultimate sign of salvation captured in his sacrificial death, Jesus truly came to save humanity from sin.  Additionally, for those who would place their faith in Him, Jesus’ name serves not only as a reminder of his purpose but also of His person. Jesus means God saves. And in truth this is who Jesus is, God in the flesh.

As we commemorate the Christmas season let the name of Jesus provoke our praise for fulling His purpose in providing us salvation. And let His name provoke our worship as we remember His person, God the son.
