Exodus 34:6-7
The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty…
Our God is merciful and just. It is awesome to think about how these seemingly contrary qualities can be perfectly expressed in the nature of God. This moment of revelation caused Moses to humble himself, hide his face and plead for pardon. The character of God expressed in that moment imposes upon him a posture of worship.
God’s mercy and justice are expressed to us in the advent of Christ. God is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness so Jesus is born. And yet God by no means will clear the guilty so Jesus is born. This revelation of God’s character in the person of Jesus demands our worship today just as it did for Moses previously. Our hearts bow and plead for pardon knowing God’s justice will be fulfilled and His mercy is extended to us.
